As the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington approaches, Lawrence and I remember the inspiring artistic opportunity he had to commemorate the 20th anniversary of this milestone in U.S. history. It was 1983. As a member of Foundry Methodist Church in Washington, D.C., Lawrence designed a commemorative poster for the occasion, promoting a series of lectures at Foundry to honor the 20th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s March on Washington.
Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young, a supporter and friend of Dr. King, flew in for the occasion as keynote speaker. Andrew Young is shown with Lawrence and the 20th anniversary poster in the photo above–when the 50th anniversary seemed far in the future. The dream lives on as celebrations continue this weekend in the District and across the nation.
